The Works of Plato

The works of Plato featured in this library include the twelve books Iamblichus required for Platonic studies, along with the Republic (which, while not included in Iamblichus' syllabus, is nevertheless important).

Syllabus of Study for the Platonic Dialogues

In the 304 or 305 CE, the great Neoplatonic philosopher Iamblichus developed a curriculum for his students to follow in their study of philosophy. He began, of course, with Plato. He started his students with Alcibiades and concluded with Timaeus and Parmenides.

The collection of Plato's dialogues presented here are these twelve works that were part of the Iamblichus' original syllabus. While the monumental work, The Republic, was not part of this syllabus, we have include it as well. The complete translation of the The Republic, however, is featured on a separate page.
